How PTFE Lined Pipe Is Manufactured: Process, Materials & Quality Control

Last quarter, a procurement manager from a German chemical firm visited our factory in Yancheng. As he watched a DN200 pipe go through final testing, he turned and asked:

"You say it's 'PTFE lined'-but how do I know it's not just sprayed on like cheap coatings?"

That's a fair question. Because not all PTFE linings are created equal-and the difference lies in the process.

The Truth About "PTFE Lined" Pipes

Many suppliers use paste extrusion or rotational molding, which can leave seams, thin spots, or trapped air. At Yancheng Tongtong Fluorine Plastic Manufacturing Co., Ltd., we use isostatic pressing + sintering-the gold standard for critical chemical service.

Here's how it's done right:

Step-by-Step: Our Manufacturing Process

1. Material Selection

Only 100% virgin PTFE resin from certified suppliers. Why? Recycled PTFE degrades faster under thermal cycling.

2. Steel Pipe Preparation

Carbon steel pipes are:

  • Shot-blasted to Sa 2.5 cleanliness
  • Pre-heated to remove moisture
  • Inner surface roughened for mechanical adhesion

3. Lining Formation

  • PTFE powder is loaded into the pipe
  • Placed in a high-pressure chamber
  • Isostatic pressing applies uniform pressure from all directions-eliminating voids
  • Slowly heated to 380°C for full sintering

> "This isn't coating-it's molding," our production lead explained to the German visitor. "The PTFE becomes one continuous tube inside your steel."

4. Cooling & Finishing

Controlled cooling prevents stress cracks. Ends are machined flat; flanges are welded per ASME B16.5.

Quality Control: Where Real Trust Is Built

We don't just make pipes-we prove they work:

✅ Spark Testing: Every inch scanned at 25 kV to detect micro-pinholes

✅ Hydrostatic Test: 1.5x design pressure for 30+ minutes

✅ Thickness Check: Ultrasonic measurement at 5+ points per meter

✅ Visual Inspection: Under bright LED light for surface defects

✅ Certification: Full traceability + test reports per HG/T 20538 & ASTM D3294

> "Show me the spark test video," the German engineer said. We did. He placed his order that afternoon.

Why This Matters in Real Applications

A seamless, fully fused PTFE lining means:

  • No delamination under thermal cycling
  • No permeation of aggressive chemicals
  • Predictable service life

Want proof before you buy?

We'll send you:

  • A sample pipe section
  • Spark test video of your batch
  • Material test report with resin lot number

Because in corrosive service, trust must be earned-not claimed.
